Got my Father In Law’s old equipment up and running.
I even recorded it in portrait mode

Now you need a matchbook collection to shove in the 8 track when the tape from Columbia House doesn’t fit right.
Columbia House was the worst

Shit. We threw away SO MANY MATCHBOOKS when we cleaned out his living space... that said I know for a fact I saw a few still down there when we were there over the weekend....

obscure joke. I think it was an old issue of Car and Driver where they described the Bricklin as looking like it was trying to swallow an 8 track.

Ah, I see it now. I’m old, but not THAT old lol
This is my first 8-track player, actually. Never even handled one before to my knowledge.

I remember my uncle had one in his ‘78 F-150.

Everyone I knew that had one either didn’t have a functioning one, or didn’t have any tapes to play in it.

He and I must be the same age. The marantz speakers were good stuff for about 1976.....

He was 63 when he passed a year and a half ago. I have two other larger Marantz speakers and the tuner. The one speaker was water damaged and the woofer is junk, and the tuner needs some work but does power on and make... noise.
The best way to listen to his collection I thought would be through period speakers.

Yes, that would make him 2 years older than me. Fun times.
Times change, when I was in school. First you had 300 records, then 300 CD’s, now 300 gigs. Sorry he has passed.
Someday you will agree that 40 years ago is not so long ago....

Ps, what is the tuner and the turntable....

The tuner is a 90's JVC (one of many that he had, this one just happens to work) and the turntable is a Dual from what appears to be the early 80's.

I already agree. I’m 38 and the 80's don’t feel that far away.

What model JVC? The speakers are good for the day, but the D ual turntable is a very high quality piece.
It appears to be direct drive and strobo speed control. That was a pretty new way to make a turntable. My guess is it sold for $2 00+ which was a lot for the day. To give a comparison, b ack then I spent $25 a week for beer and pizza in college and my tuition was $275 a quarter.

I’ll have to check. I took a pic of everything that I grabbed but I can’t make it out... its the one on the left below the TEAC unit (that’s also junk).
In fact, now that I look at it again it might not be the JVC, it might be the Technics?
The speed control is neat, and still works. It does look like a pricey piece , I’m glad it still works.

The Marantz Stereo tuner/amp is the high value unit here. It has c omparable quality and was probably more expensive than the turntable. It was far above my pay grade for the day. I believe there are collectors of them.
Those were the years that the Japanese were making crazy good stuff and tried to “ out do” everybody with Stereo design. This was k ind of the equivalent of the motorcycle and car wars of the 80's.
Here’s my modest Sherwood from the day. It probably cost 1/2 what your Marantz cost . Your father in law had good taste.
